Professor Karwan Mahmood is a historian of the modern Middle East, specializing in Kurdish political history and the region’s interaction with the great powers of the twentieth century. He is currently Professor of History at the University of Erbil, with visiting appointments at SOAS University of London and Columbia University in New York.
Prof. Mahmood is the author of seven books and dozens of academic articles. His work has been translated into eight languages and is widely cited as foundational reading in Kurdish studies. In 2022, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Kurdish Studies Association.
He holds a doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and lives between Erbil and London with his family.
